Free I Spy Quilt Tutorial

Free Pattern and Tutorial to make an easy I Spy Quilt – great to give as a baby quilt or baby playmat! Using simple raw edge applique!

We all know the game – I spy with my little eye…well an I Spy Quilt is basically a quilt that helps you play that game!

What is an I Spy Quilt?

Materials Needed

– High Loft Polyester Batting – White or low volume background fabric – Backing Fabric – Various scraps of fabric – Selvage edge remnants (optional) – Pinking Shears

STEP 1

I used two white-on-white fabric remnants and pieced them to make the total size of my background fabric. I cut it large so I could trim it later.

STEP 2

Using your pinking shears cut out various images to play I Spy with. I use pinking shears to reduce fraying on the edges of the scraps.

Cut out your I Spy images

How many images you cut out is up to you – I had about 65 different images on mine

How many images should you use?

STEP 3

You can use any kind of lightweight double-sided fusible product to prepare your I Spy Images for attaching to your quilt.

STEP 4

Okay this part might feel a bit strange but what I did next was to baste just the background fabric to the batting – no backing fabric yet!

STEP 5

Next is one of the fun parts! You get to sit with your quilt top and play around with where to place your images.
